When combining certain active ingredients on your skin, it’s important to be aware that negative reactions can occur.
As someone who works with many gorgeous faces, I sometimes notice that the texture of a client’s skin doesn’t feel quite right under my hands—almost as if there’s an invisible layer of sandpaper beneath the surface. The skin may also feel and look thinner than usual. After discussing skincare routines with my clients, I’ve often found that the main culprits are Vitamin C serums paired with retinols.
Both ingredients are very powerful, and using them together can lead to skin sensitivity, especially for those with delicate or reactive skin. Personally, I can’t tolerate any brand of Vitamin C serum on my own skin—it becomes incredibly irritated and raw.
To avoid overwhelming your skin, consider these suggestions:
- Use Vitamin C serum in the morning and retinol at night.
- If you prefer using both together, wait a few minutes after applying the first product to allow it to fully absorb before applying the second.
- Choose a lower percentage of retinol or a gentler Vitamin C serum.
- Ensure proper hydration. My sensitive skin responds well to a barrier-protecting moisturizer with ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide.
- Consult with your dermatologist to determine if both products are truly necessary for your routine.
- Consider ingesting Vitamin C instead. Your skin—and your body—will still benefit!
Balance is key with skincare. Listen to your skin, adjust as needed, and you’ll enjoy a radiant, healthy complexion!
